Learning the Biz

My role in coming with Joker for the Berkshire-Hathaway conference was intended to be secondary.  I figured that I would be mostly there in a “nursing” capacity along the flight and throughout the day.  I imagined that I would sit by the hotel pool, or wander to a cafe downtown and write and just chill while Joker businessed.

Firstly, our hotel did not have a pool.  It was also 15 minutes away from where all the major businessing was happening.  There are a surprising number of hotels in Omaha.

Secondly, this conference is A REALLY BIG DEAL for the investment firms.  Warren Buffet’s company is Berkshire-Hathaway and the main sponsor/host of the event.

Thirdly, it truly is an event!  There is a convention filled with companies of which Berkshire-Hathaway is invested.  There are meetings, seminars, speakers, talks, and many other interesting options for folks to attend.  Not to mention, the bar side schmoozing.   Men in SUITS everywhere.

Fourthly, Joker’s company did not seem to mind my utter lack of business experience when it came to having me pitch in as an extra set of hands.  A quick trip to dress barn and I was properly outfitted for the role.

I have to say that I really enjoyed being able to help out at the seminar and the luncheon that Joker’s company sponsored.  It was also really cool because Joker was able to present his strategy and I was so happy I was able to be a part of that.

While I might jest that “businessing” is hard, I really enjoyed the opportunity to learn a little bit better of an understanding of what it is that Joker does every day.  (Likewise, he was able to come to my work a few weeks ago and see me in action for a short period of time).  I got to meet a lot of really interesting people, from all over the world and I think that was my favorite part.

So, while this time away wasn’t exactly the peaceful retreat that I expected I wouldn’t trade one bit of my experience!  It’s always nice to experience different things… even if you don’t really understand 99% of what’s happening!

P.S.  I did have quite a bit of time to work on some blog entries after a long hiatus, so it all turned out okay in the end.
